Once the New Look was consecrated in 1947, Christian Dior took on the role of ambassador for French fashion abroad.
“Fabric is the sole vehicle of our dreams. […] Fashion, in sum, comes from a dream, and dreaming is an escape.”
With this in mind, he founded Christian Dior-New York, Inc. in 1948, which offered Ready-to-Wear garments tailored to an American clientele. This revolutionary initiative was followed by the opening of CD Models in London, and then by a boutique in Caracas, Venezuela, in 1953. His desire to exalt the excellence of Haute Couture also led him to send his collections around the world, presented to global audiences by his very own models.
The Autumn-Winter 1951 line revealed a series of evening gowns christened with names such as États-Unis, Mexique, Angleterre, and Australie, which were immortalised in front of the Acropolis in Athens. They symbolise the diversity of the countries from which Christian Dior took inspiration, an approach honoured by his successors. The creativity of the House is an ideal occasion to pay tribute to ancestral cultures and exceptional savoir-faire through an array of infinitely rich shared dialogues.
